Follow Airways not following Airways and Flight Duration

Postby jumberlack » Fri Oct 21, 2011 9:34 am

Hello,

First off, thanks for making IF.
It's just what I was missing in FSX and after only one test flight, I bought a license.
It works perfectly with VoxATC and My Traffic X and the briefing and the weather simulation are great.

I am having some problems that I hope you can help with.
IF is not planning flights along the airways or sticking to my required flight time.

1. For example, I just generated a flight with the following parameters:
Plan Type: IFR
Plan Builder: Follow Airways
The Route generated was KNUW YYJ ARRUE CYQQ
ARRUE is an intersection but on the wrong airway, CASDY would be correct for this flight.
What do I need to do to get IF to generate routes correctly along airways?
I know that I can create the plan myself but I don't want to, that's one of the reasons that I got IF..

2. Duration Hours: Min, Max.
Min set to 0.75, Max set to 1.0
Fight times of up to 1.20 are being generated, why?
Could it be because I selected ILS in the Filter?

3. Time Display on briefing
Could you please change the time display from 24:xx to 00:xx?
Takeoff Time: 23:57
ETA: 24:39
Flight Time: 0:41

Thanks for your help,
Toby

Hi,

Thanks for your support.

1. Routes: Depends on what restrictions you place on the planner, cruise altitude, speeds, would all affect the outcome for example.

So for a 737 I got:
KNUW YVR20 YVR DUPOD CYQQ
all jet airways

And for a B58 I got:
KNUW CANDL HUH HUH10 YVR CANRY JORJA
TREEL MACAR JAINE CYQQ
all Victor Airways

If it cannot get you onto an airway it gives you whatever wp it can.

2. There may not be an airport that gets you the exact time you are after. So you may get one within 30mins of your requested time.

The more you fly routes the more you will see it does the best job of auto routing.

3. Do you mean:

Takeoff Time: 23:57
ETA: 24:39 - change this
Flight Time: 0:41

Takeoff Time: 23:57
ETA: 00:39 - for this?
Flight Time: 0:41

If that's what it says then it should of course be 00:39!

All the best;
Steve

Hehe, missed this one...

now shows 00:xx
Takeoff Time: 23:52
ETA: 00:42
Flight Time: 0:49

Fixed in [rg] see report page for details.

Thanks again;

Hi Steve,

1. Routes
The route was generated for the Turbine Duke, settings used see jpg below.
Was your route generated using 'airways' or 'airways and vor to vor'?

2. Thanks for the explanation. I've set max to 0.70 and it seems to be working better now.

3. That's exactly what I meant, thanks, where is this report page? I couldn't find it anywhere.

Thanks for your help,
Toby

The Report page is on the Ideal Flight section of the site:
http://www.codelegend.com/idealflight/report.htm

When you choose "Follow Airways" the complete set of waypoints is given. If you choose "Follow Airways VOR to VOR" the same route will be given but with no Intersections shown, so you get a straight line between VORs, which could fly you into a mountain. "Follow Airways" routes always stick to Jet or Victor, whichever your preferred cruise altitude dictates.

The pure "VOR to VOR" routes mix Jet and Victor airways and waypoints to get you whatever Nav Waypoints you can have en-route.

Ok, I understand but why do you think I was routed through intersections and not along an airway?
I had 'use airways' selected.
I don't want to flog a dead horse, I'm just trying to understand how IF works.
Thanks,
Toby

Intersections are proper Airways, VOR to VOR simply cuts out the Intersections...

You get Intersections where there is not physically a VOR. You navigate intersections by finding them on VOR radials, and where two intersect is the intersection. So they might guide you through a mountain range.

I'll rephrase my question, as I was using the incorrect term, sorry.
Why wasn't I routed along a Victor airway?

Hi Toby,
If there are so few waypoints that a logical route cannot be planned with waypoints other than direct, then any waypoints available (whatever airway) will be used so at least some navigation can take place.
