This has got us puzzled... How's it look without thermal and ridge running?

Hi Toby,
I will make sure you can run IF weather, once I find out what is going on I should be able to do whatever it takes to get you going properly. Thanks for your patience.

I just tried default scenery with default c172 and it was the same, not so bad but the same effect everywhere.
The only difference was this time there were cumulus in the sea...
I also had thermal and ridge switched off.
Weird because the weather portrayal was different and I thought it was fixed so if I fly the same flight again, same time, same place, I should get the same weather, which I didn't.

I also tried disabling the ASE haze layer (returning the original FSX file), and tried the flight again.
This time you could clearly see the crazy effect in the sea everywhere.
I think something is wrong with my IF fog layer.
It seems to be causing mayhem on the water's surface.
I use FSWC but I don't think that can be the problem?
Perhaps the REX water wave animation?
I don't know...

Is there any more info that I can give you?
Hope we find a fix,
Toby

There should only be a certain type of stratus cloud anywhere near the sea. Sometimes when hills come in you are going to see cumulous interfacing with the hills but never the sea. I'm checking through all that later just to be sure. Since IF sends METARs to FSX the same as any other weather, you should get the same effect with any weather system.
Can you try a defaut fsx.cfg? Make sure to backup the current one and delete it, so FSX creates a new one.
I'll be back later with my results. I'm delaying [rg] to sort this out.

New fsx.cfg and I disabled IF weather and created my own weather, using the custom option in FSX, and everything worked fine.

When I then re-enabled IF and tried it again, the whole sea around me blinked like it had a layer made up of polygons (triangles) laid over the surface. Maybe this makes sense to you but I've never seen this effect before.

Video 2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECDRaqHLXmM

I also saw the stratus you mentioned but it was in strips, in places, and looked most out of place, see video above.

Then I tried ASE weather, with IF weather disabled. I saw the typical ASE flashing sky and sea while the weather updated and was injected but after that everything was normal. A few clouds that intersected the mountains around CYVR were jittery but in general it was ok.

This weirdness is unique to IF, as far as I can tell, and is not related to:
1. Custom scenery
2. Custom aircraft
3. GEX, UTX, ASE, REX

I run Win 7 64bit, latest drivers, 2xGTX 580 3gb, i7 2600k and everything is ship shape with my system. FSX runs like a dream, except around KJFK ;), and the weather and atc add-ons that I use work ok.

Let me know what information you need.
Thanks,
Toby

Can you try IF weather but with the thermal and ridge disabled?

Please try without thermal and ridge checked in the weather page, since it's the only difference.

Here's some screenshots of the weird 'overlay' effect I'm seeing, with thermal and ridge effect disabled.
It's like a semi transparent layer of something laid over the ground.
I've a feeling it's the haze layer that's not showing correctly, is that possible?
It also seems to be in a radius around the aircraft, that is it doesn't extend to infinity.
The effect still happens, sometimes, when the sim is paused.
If you try to take a screenshot, normally it won't appear on the screenshot.
I'm just trying to give you as much help as I can here..
Video to come.

Thanks,
Toby

Keep going, we'll work it out. What happens if you set visibility to -3 in IF?
