merging all of my profiles into 1?

Postby ke7zum » Wed Nov 18, 2020 6:09 pm

I know this might seem an odd question, but Is there a way to merge all of my profiles into 1? I'm not very patient when switching profiles, as the thing must re index all of my aircraft every time I change in the profiles dialogue. Anyway love the program

It is not an odd question and it has been asked before several times.

It may seem like the aircraft are indexed again but this is not every time you change profiles, only when you change to a profile that does not already have information about new aircraft.

New aircraft are only added to the current profile once. It searches for changes to the installed aircraft and adds new aircraft once. When aircraft are removed they are only removed once, from the current profile.

When you switch to a profile with all current aircraft it does not index again. Each profile maintains a separate set of information about aircraft.

So after you added an aircraft to your sim, you start IF and the aircraft are indexed to find the new aircraft and it adds new aircraft to the current profile. When you change to another profile, those new aircraft are added to that profile at that time. That only happens once.

If you create a new profile it will assume all the current installed aircraft from the initial information. Each new profile starts with the current set of aircraft and going forward maintains separate information about each aircraft for that profile.

Since each profile maintains separate information about the aircraft, if the program was made to add new aircraft to every profile at that time it would take longer by the number of profiles you have.

However, say you add an aircraft to your sim, IF adds it to your profile, but you don't like it and remove it from the sim, then the aircraft is removed from the profile. Switching to another profile will not index the aircraft. If the aircraft had been added to all the profiles it would take longer and then to be deleted from all the profiles takes longer again.

Some profiles might no longer be relevant to you but still remain. If all profiles are updated, a new aircraft would have been added to those profiles as well.

So in the end it is better to only associate new aircraft to the current profile at that time, then only add to other profiles as needed, if and when you change to another profile.

Yeah, I'm always adding new aircraft and removing ones I dont' like so for me it is taking for ever to switch profiles, about 2-3 minutes as for reasons I own't go into, my stuff is located on an internal SATA drive that is not an ssd.

I have let's say 5 profiles. I want to switch to profile 2 from profile 5. I have to up arrow, wait, then up arrow again, wait, etc. This gets old after about the second time.

I found a way to improve performance adding and removing aircraft and changing profiles. The code to do it was already there, but there were some caveats in and around needed sorting out. Available in next preview build 03 I'll make available soon. Thanks for the help with that.

The changes made are several:

First; on the Profiles page, the text in the selection box items for each profile has changed so they start with the profile number. You can now select the profile by pressing the number key rather than up and down cursor.

Second; the update to the aircraft list is done when you come back from the Profiles page to the main page.

Third; the updates to the aircraft lists are made without unnecessary checking through all the aircraft.

This update 04 for P3D v4/5 is to avoid the "Cannot load settings" message during setup on some systems:
