Ideal Flight can be picked up in minutes if the new user is prepared to accept that they won't understand the entire product in five minutes. It is as vast as the simulator itself in functionality.

Or indeed five months.

The SP of IF is already understood by most users before imagining a program like Ideal Flight even exists:

Where can I go from here? And for that matter, can I even fly away from here in this plane? I want to get on with flying as soon as possible. I want all the info I can get gathered together in one place. And if I want to use my fuel planner, then IF can check the result as well, and keep a check on my stopping distances.

NVDA and Narrator are used by Ideal Flight because they can be used in a cooperative manner. Narrator takes precedence since this is the screen reader supplied with Windows.

Other screen readers such as System Access and Jaws have some similarities but were in the long run, more tuned to reading any kind of program that had no intention of providing accessibility to screen readers in the first place.

NVDA and Narrator are more lightweight on the system and better suited for use with that system running the flight simulation.

We can set Narrator or NVDA modes to forced in the Setting page. Experiment with those settings when use of other screen readers are attempted. Ideal Flight will recognise SA and Jaws and select a preferred reader type NVDA or Narrator.

Otherwise, without a screen reader detected, Ideal Flight will appear as if any other program.

With Accessibility disabled the program is like any other. Since the program uses graphical components there will not be sufficient descriptions for simple screen readers.

With Accessibility Automatic, Narrator and NVDA modes are used when they are detected.

Uncheck Automatic to prefer NVDA, Narrator or Other. Check Other to detect SA, Jaws, NVDA and Narrator and presents Narrator mode.

The IF menus are also available from the usual F10 key, Shift+F10 for the popup menu and also ALT and CTRL+ALT will cycle the menus too.

Sometimes with NVDA I get problems with web pages, Hotmail crashes so I always turn NVDA off before using that now. Other times it may appear to be asleep and I have not worked out the key to wake it. So in those cases I stop it and restart it. As we pop up web pages in IF that can be a problem. Since the changes to the web pages in Ideal Flight, and a recent update from NVDA, has helped a bit and it's less troublesome. I still get the Hotmail crashes. I often restart NVDA before starting Ideal Flight to be sure it is working OK first.

Reminder that the new version is available from the Ideal Flight Downloads page.

The upgrade focuses mainly on Accessibility but there are many improvements where necessary, and some new features. Please see the Report page for details.

Work has already started on the next Ideal Flight version which continues with the accessibility theme.
