how I use ideal flight as a visually impaired flight simmer

Postby ke7zum » Sun Mar 17, 2019 5:34 pm

Hello. I didn't know where to put this, but I just want to say, I'm very excited about this new (or maybe not so new) product and want to publicly thank the developers for working with us to make the product accessible.

Let me add to that statement. I'm visually impaired and have ben since birth. I use a screen reader called NVDA which can be accessed at nvda-project.org this is a free open source screen reader I encourage all developers to use and test with for accessibility. If you want to see how I as a flight simmer who is blind uses screen reading technology and mainstream softwares go to the following link. I had fun and was shouting with joy here. Thanks to ideal flight and other softwares I use. I really am loving ideal flight. We finally have a fun and accessible flight planner at our finger tips.

Take care all, and be blessed, and if you have any questions, please by all means ask me.

Hello there,

An accessibility update is in progress right now so if you can hold on a bit I'll let you know how to update when the time comes.

All the best
Steve.

Hey, thanks a million for that.. I really cannot wait to use the more accessible version. I'm sure it will be a fun adventure like this has ben.

Again thanks so much for taking the time to modify the program for accessibility.

Take care and have a happy Thursday.

You too. The accessibility update is progressing more quickly than expected. It's got extra help in there now as well, more about that later. Not too long to wait now.

I'm on the last few pages but it will not be this weekend. Taken a bit longer than I expected to check it through with the readers as I apply the changes. But the wait will be worth it. It's not just a careful arrangement of controls to support the readers. It automatically senses the readers and adjusts for best performance. Readers respect tab order or control creation order. IF already makes controls on the fly so it was not a big deal to make those controls perform they way the readers desire. There's a lot of things that are required in addition to mere tags to controls to make sense of the pages. It's not a small task. Won't be long, hopefully ready for a preview run at least by next week end.

Progress is good.

Maybe landing into a strong headwind but it's not a go-around...check out the report page for details:

What are the headwind details? Progres is looking good from the report page.

And hey, that's what preview builds are for, IMO. Let us help you troubleshoot if possible.

I'll be very grateful to you for helping out as much as you can. Indeed I'm very pleased you came to me with the request and all the information and help so far, it's been absorbed. On the conversion to Ideal Flight, I felt that it was on final when I had a step and repeat process in place for each page. But it turned out time consuming getting the right text into place for the reader, it's no good just having a button with text on, you need a description read out. That sort of thing has taken up more time than expected. However, it's not too bad, though some pages have taken an entire day to upgrade. All the main ones are done now so only easy ones left to do. Installer and uninstaller is complete. So will take as long as it takes but I will make it available as soon as it's in a usable state. I was hoping that would have been around now, frustrating for me to see this stage to take longer. Anyway, I think in the end it will be a very fast turn around overall so we shall see. I'll get back to it...
