how to choose grass strips for dep arr ?

Postby alf-uk » Tue Sep 08, 2015 8:17 pm

Hi, sorry if it is written somewhere but my search didn't reveal anything.

I would like to make random routes from grass strips, from and to.
(anything small, gravel etc...just small airstrips )
the Demo version did not give access to Mission so I purchased today and tried this:
Flight Generator (Flight Settings) / Mission / Surface Types - uncheck: concrete, asphalt, Bitum, Macadam, Urban, Tarmac (the rest I have checked ) , OK, save
choose duration
click on map , then "new departure"
-> Build Flight
I always get big airports with tarmac or such, tried in france and PNW
what am I doing wrong ?

2 other newbie questions:
a)the message "allow MSFS Steam to launch with optional command line " C:\users....Ideal_Flight.FLT"
can I do something to not get it every time and have to click OK ?
b) I read it is possible to have fsx running and then start IF, is the procedure somewhere explained ?

thanks for help :)
kind regards
alf

Hi,

The problem comes with selecting the Surface Types in the Mission Page. Think of the surfaces as Hard, Water, Soft, and Loose. If I uncheck everything but grass, and I do a search (unchecking all filters in flight gen) I get one airport EGHR Goodwood, the only one with only grass runways. But if I also enable a hard runway, I get dozens of airports. We don't actually have a filter to include only airports that also have a grass strip as well as other types, but I may put an option in to list those or filter them somehow for an update.

Back selecting the Surface Types again, if I set at the top, "Soft Runway Surfaces Preferred". I will get placed on those grass strips if there is one available at the airport. Uncheck "Loose Runway Surfaces Preferred" to avoid picking up gravel and dirt runways if there are those present. Also remember the runway length and width in Aircraft Parameters specified small enough to catch small airports.

Two choices to avoid the FSX Steam messages:

If you have the Steam Edition of FSX, and as it starts up, it asks to Run as Admin, then it is better to start IF10 with the "Run as Admin" setting on the IF10 desktop icon properties. When IF10 starts as admin, then it will also start FSX as admin, and you don't then get the questions from FSX-SE.

Another way is to run IF10 setup. On the popup menu (right-click) there is "Other Settings". Look down the bottom of the submenu for "Starting FSX-SE: Disable require admin".

You can check that menu option and then press Update, the system will be set up so that you don't need to worry about the messages. After getting a new version of FSX-SE, or beta version, we will have to run that again.

...Forgot to mention. Don't have the AIRAC "Integrated" and searches will find more grass runways.

OK I found a problem with AIRAC data which may have limited runway information. So with the next IF10 update I have improved the behaviour for AIRAC Integrated to reveal airports that have grass runways along with hard surfaced runways even if they don't exist in the AIRAC. Thanks for your input alf, your question led me to this little improvement. :D

When the AIRAC is not Integrated and we select in "Mission" "Surface Types" only soft surfaces, the airports found actually include any that have a soft runway. Note that Urban is classed as hard surface, Forest is soft.

I get my grass strips now ! :)

was my fault as I missed the Filter in Flight Generator check boxes.
lol - I had grass surface and also "only choose ILS airports" -> that might not work very well together ;)

I have now Flight Generator/Filter, lower row left 3 ON : Exclude ILS, Tower frequency, Parking
all other filter are unchecked
Mission/ Surface Types: checked = prefer soft, prefer loose, all grass, snow ice turf gravel dirt
unchecked = concrete, water, asphalt, urban, bituminous, macadam, tarmac, wright
I tried 2 in PNW and 3 in south France, all nice small grass strips, LOVE IT !!! :)

---------------------------------
when fsx is running and I start IF 10, make a new flight and want to fly that in fsx, is this the right procedure ?
- when I click the 2nd left button, fsx-se Menu I get IF 10 in fsx addon menu
then click in fsx flightplan, load flight plan , move to new location

thanks

Yes! Or when FSX is running, you can start IF10, build a flight, and then just press the Fly! button and FSX will take over with the flight loading.

In the next build preview 03, a subset called "Soft Strips Airports" is created and updated when the Scenery Index is created or updated. Can be switched off with; Config.ini: [Indexes], AddSoftAirports=False. The subset when loaded into the Flight Generator restricts searches to those airports with soft runways and strips.

Preview 03 version available now in the Dev & New Builds section. Run the Scenery Index and look in the Subset dropdown on the Flight Gen page.
