Update immminent for P3D v4

Postby Steve Waite » Mon Feb 25, 2019 10:39 am

I've been working hard on an update for the P3D v4 version. P3D v4 eats PCs for breakfast and I'm getting a lot of mail about setting up suitably for that PC. Managing the CPU setup is becoming more important as the corecounts climb. IFPro will now incorporate CPU monitoring and reporting for tailoring the throughput partitions for P3D. Included is a CPU Window and additional traces in the csv log.

In the meantime anyone having trouble setting up might like to check out the way I show how to manage the throughput capacity of the PC by switching VSync on and off to see how the fps is maintained above the refresh rate of the monitor. Then increasing settings until the CPU tops out. The ability to work on this is expanded with IFPro's CPU Window and reporting. More soon.

It's really only that I've not finalised the feature so better to wait till then, not long to go.

There's a few nice touches under the hood, the default aircraft list and AI list have been updated to 4.4 - I've also improved scrolling text to the last page shows a more full page rather than the last few lines of text.

The delay to the expected Update is due to requests from the blind pilots community that require more help with their screen reader software.

All the Ideal Flight versions are undergoing an important update to include specially coded support for the screen readers.

The problem presented is that these programs don't all work the same. Also, adhering to a particular requirement of the layout of controls on a form is not reliable, and different between readers.

Ideal Flight will include fully automated support for readers by understanding the type of reader and dynamically adjusting the forms to suit the readers to the best advantage when they are active. Plus a user preferred setting.

The codebase is in and working. The time now is taken linking in the hundreds of text messages to the right places. There's no rushing it - it will take as long as it takes. Maybe a week or so if things go smoothly.

The accessibility upgrade is going well and a first preview will be available in days not weeks - hopefully.
The code's actually not been too much trouble or take too long to develop. What I didn't fully estimate is the amount of time testing takes to go through as each item is linked in for the screen readers. So be it. It will take as long as it takes, I'll get a preview out as soon as the major work of accessibility is available. Later previews with tighten that up and introduce some other upgrades along the way.

Visually, Ideal Flight has rows of components and collective textual descriptions mostly to the left. Some items change description depending on settings. Some become enabled and disabled during changes within components, edit boxes and check boxes. Each page was encountered sequentially, code changes mostly took an hour or two. Then, small checks diagnosing additional code to select particular text or new text to suit the readers in particular was taken on step by step. Each item contributed to an endpoint that seemed to just keep accelerating away into the future. Probably needed a team of three on it to be efficient.

Anyway, It's good enough right now for the first accessibility phase and there's lots of mods to try out as well.

Mostly it should be quite robust, but as usual there's some things still left open ended and being worked on.

The few special forms such as Start Other Apps and Exports will be included in phase two.

I'm rounding up the modifications and checking across with the other Ideal Flight versions right now. I'm hoping to upload preview 01 before Easter break.

Thanks!
