Flyinside and VR compatibility

Postby jkeye » Tue Aug 16, 2016 8:31 am

Hi
I'm using my HTC Vive and flyinside fsx to fly in VR exclusively.Do not think I'll ever go back to flat screen.
I do miss Ideal Flight. Is there any way Ideal flight can "inject" into FSX or P3D once it has been started (or be started from within the sim/fire up Flyinside (which is another front end for the sim).Right now I'm at a loss trying to get the two to talk to each other and each crashes the other
Many thanks
Jay

Yes just use the IF10 Fly! button when the sim is running.

So the sequence of events is...:

1) Run FSX:SE with FlyInside - Load into default flight
2) Run Ideal Flight & build the flight as normal
3) Hit 'Fly'

If I try this - I get a crash in FSX, similar to that described by the OP. The new flight does load, but then the crash. FSX doesn't actually CtD, but controls no longer work after this point, so I'm stuck at the starting state.

I did wonder if there was a way to get Ideal Flight to launch the FlyInside version of FSX, rather than the FSX.exe itself, or attempting to make use of an instance already running....

I'm not sure I can make any suggestions with such limited information. It couldn't be simpler, the sim starts from a flight file, the Fly! button just sends the Windows command prompt to start the sim, or if the sim is already running the Fly! button sends the Windows command prompt to restart the sim the file name is picked up in the command prompt by FSE:SE. I would have a look at your Fly inside manual. Restarted with the flight file, if there's any problem in there from the IF10 side it could be a value in the flight file. Anyway, I'll need to find out what you are doing. Are you starting IF10 with the Run as Admin checked since you are using FSX:SE it need admins privileges to run correctly.

I think the key part is that Ideal Flight & FlyInside are both launchers of FSX of a kind. So Ideal Flight launches FSX when you hit the 'Fly' button. But because it runs FSX.exe directly, FlyInside doesn't run - so you get FSX running just fine.. but without the VR interface.

FlyInside launches FSX when you run it. But does so independently of Ideal Flight. So you'll get the VR, but loading into your default flight.

I didn't realise that if FSX was already running, Ideal Flight will cause FSX to re-launch. I think that may be the problem - the shutting down of the existing FSX instance is possibly causing FlyInside to crash, and new instance doesn't work correctly in VR because FlyInside wasn't the application to launch it?

FSX does not close down it only restarts the flight since it is loading a flight file. To send the command line you can try it yourself, locate a .FLT file in Explorer, right click for the popup menu and choose Open with FSX while FSX is running.

Why don't you have IF10 launch Fly Inside with the start programs section?

Or start FSX and flyinside, and then start the IF10 flight. etc.

..Sorry but I just don't have a clear picture of what you are attempting. Help me to help you. There's videos of IF10 running with VR on UTube.

"FlyInside launches FSX when you run it. But does so independently of Ideal Flight. So you'll get the VR, but loading into your default flight."

So now just press the IF10 Fly! button and FSX loads the flight - just like if you choose one from the menu - try the menu -does the menu load flight work?

You see all that IF10 does is invoke FSX to load the flight - the same code it uses when you choose to load a flight.

So if you can get up and running in VR, then load a flight file .FLT from the FSX menu, then you can do it in IF10.

Strange - I do get a different result depending on whether or not I launch the flight from IF10, or if I load an existing IF flight from within FSX.

There's definitely something about the way IF10 invokes a flight that FlyInside doesn't like - although the crash you get is weird... the flight loads, but all joystick/keyboard controls stop working.
But if I run FlyInside/FSX and then load a flight from IF10... all works fine (although I don't then get the IF10 evaluation at the end of course).

If I launch FSX from IF10, then FlyInside doesn't get invoked and everything works fine (but without VR of course).

Is it possible to change IF10 to call a different executable instead of fsx.exe?
