Steve, you are getting confused with certain info that gets saved in the .flt file and other info which gets saved in the fsx.cfg (upon fsx shutdown). The weather themes and ability to use downloaded wx get saved in the .flt file....but the download winds aloft checkbox gets saved in the fsx.cfg (after you close fsx).

Try my scenario and you'll see what I mean.

I just tried but the winds aloft stays set to 'on'. I tried opening with and restarting FSX, but the winds aloft always stays set. What setting in the .FLT changes winds aloft?

in fsx.cfg

OK, now I installed IF and turned off IF weather and started a flight.
Since there is no weather setting in the .FLT, and as you say the .FLT changes the weather settings even if none is specified, and so FSX changes the "Winds Aloft" setting to off.

I will continue to see if there is a way to defeat this situation arising...

ok sounds like you understand now...good to hear, yea really needs to be fixed.

PS...maybe this will help...the weather setting in my default flight i always use looks like this (and as long as I dont use IF the winds aloft checkbox always stays on)

[Weather]
WeatherType=0
ThemeName=

Maybe if you have IF create it's flt file using these params then the download winds aloft setting will stay checked? (dunno again, heh)

I can confirm the above posted weather settings in the flt file works. If I change the weather section of the ideal flight flt file to read exactly the way i posted above, and then start fsx using this flt file (by double clicking on on the flt file) then the flight starts using the "clear skies" weather theme (which is really no weather or winds at all) AND the "download winds aloft" checkbox stays ON in the settings menu.

What would be really cool then, to add to IF's weather page would be a user choice of starting the flight with no weather loaded (using the setting above), or starting the flight with downloaded real wx (static), and you can even add all the MS wx themes into IF's interface if you wish. You could make these different options available when IF's weather engine is disabled of course. Dunno what the exact coding for the weather section should be for using downloaded static weather as i havent save a flt file yet using that as the default preference...but it'll only take a minute to test it and get the proper code to include...if youd like me to get you all the different codes that would need to be written to IF's flt file just lemme know!

Leaving the .FLT with just a simple weather theme might be better. There is a weather upgrade in the pipeline that enables these settings, it has been on the todo list for ages. Thanks for perservering with it.

if you go to:
C:\ProgramData\Ideal Flight 10\Profiles\Setups
you can put your weather settings in "Default_Default.ini" - all new ones are created from this.

I tried

[Weather]
WeatherType=0
ThemeName=

and still the winds aloft is found to be turned off

Got a few more things to try. Back later...

make sure (after you notice it's been turned OFF) that you remember to turn it back ON and then close FSX...then check the fsx.cfg to make sure it's truly enabled there before testing again with IF. Remember that if you close fsx with it OFF its going to get saved that way in the cfg and itll always be off next time you start up.

...ill have to test the ini method you mentioned...but for now i just added those weather code lines directly to the idealflight.flt, then double clicked it to open fsx and download winds aloft stays ON this way. Just make certain that when you test it again that its truly enabled in the fsx.cfg file before starting IF and fsx.

...will have more time either later tonight or tomorrow, Steve
