FSX-SE, Original IF10 and >augmented

The original IF10 and expansion pack unlock >augmented can be used with FSX-SE and is the same as IF10 Special Edition.

FSX-SE works the same as FSX-MS, when FSX-SE is installed on a system with no traces of FSX-MS present, or if FSX-SE is installed alongside FSX-MS it makes new folders so only recent addons might work reliably.

IF10 Setup must be run after FSX-SE is run once after installing or updating FSX-SE, and after that IF10 Setup is run so that it can adjust IF10 to work with the latest FSX-SE specification.

We run IF10 Setup and choose the FSX location; the new FSX-SE program files folder (right hand '.' button):
“C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\FSX”

At the time of writing, the FSX-SE .exe (10.0.62615.0) is set to force UAC intervention and Run as Admin. Instead, when we choose Run as Admin in the IF10 desktop icon properties IF10 takes care of Admin. Since IF10 is running as admin, the UAC does not intervene when IF10 starts FSX-SE. It's not a big deal to run as admin, but some IF10 functions require that IF10 and FSX-SE have the same level of permissions to work as intended. (e.g. Affinity setting, Fullscreen Max Window). So if we run the sim as admin we must also run IF10 as Admin.

IF10 Setup can remove the requirement of FSX-SE to elevate to Admin privileges by checking the Remove Admin menu item in Setup, Settings submenu, before pressing the Update button. Whenever FSX-SE is updated or the file cache is checked we will need to re-run the IF10 Setup after FSX-SE is run once and again check the menu item to remove the admin requirement before applying the IF10 Update.

FSX folders to remove before an FSX-SE installation (as a single FSX version):
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X"
"C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\FSX"
"C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\FSX"
"C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX"
"C:\Users\<you>\Documents\Flight Simulator X Files"
"C:\Users\<you>\Pictures\Flight Simulator X Files"
You may want to backup or simply rename some.

Check the FSX registry key is removed (64bit o/s shown):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\microsoft games\flight simulator\10.0

After setting up FSX-SE, make sure the FSX registry key "SetupPath" contains the full directory name of the folder containing fsx.exe, e.g. "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\FSX".

Make sure the Legacy Interface SP1a is installed, otherwise the IF10 menu may not appear in the sim addons menu.

DovetailGames registry key contains "Exe_Path" and "Install_Path":
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\DovetailGames\FSX

A properly installed FSX-SE, installed alone (without FSX present), will place the original FSX registry key in the registry for compatibility reasons:

64bit o/s:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\microsoft games\flight simulator\10.0\SetupPath="C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\FSX"

32bit o/s:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\microsoft games\flight simulator\10.0\SetupPath="C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\FSX"

The FSX-SE program .exe can be adjusted to remove the Admin requirement with the IF10 installer. See preview version [sh04] in the New Builds section at the bottom of the Preview discussion.

Version [sh] can also run FSX-SE even when installed parallel to FSX - see preview builds [sh04].

After selecting a new version or beta version from Steam, first run FSX-SE and it will re-install to the new version selected. Then when FSX-SE has run for the first time after updating, close then run IF10 setup and "Update" will alter the IF10 program to work with the new version FSX-SE.
